Ninjutsu — what does it mean?

Return an unblocked attacking creature to your hand to put this ninja onto the battlefield from your hand, tapped and attacking.

Ninjutsu appears on 37 cards.

How does Ninjutsu work?

Ninjutsu is an activated ability that works while the card is in your hand. To activate it, you pay the ninjutsu cost, reveal the card, and return an unblocked attacking creature you control to its owner's hand. When the ability resolves, the ninja goes onto the battlefield tapped and attacking. It attacks the same player, planeswalker or battle as the creature you returned.

Timing is everything. A creature is only unblocked once blockers have been declared, so you can't use ninjutsu in the declare attackers step. The usual moment is the declare blockers step, after your opponent has chosen not to block something. You can still activate it in the combat damage step or end of combat step, but once regular combat damage has been dealt, the ninja arrives too late to deal any. There's one useful exception: if a creature with first strike dealt damage in the first combat damage step, a ninja brought in after that still deals damage in the regular combat damage step.

Returning the creature is part of the cost, so your opponent can't stop the ninjutsu by removing that creature in response. Ninjutsu isn't casting, so it can't be hit by a counterspell for spells and doesn't trigger cast abilities. The ninja was never declared as an attacker, so abilities that trigger when it attacks don't trigger, but abilities that trigger when it deals combat damage to a player do, and so do its abilities that trigger when it enters. The returned creature leaves the battlefield: a token stops existing, Auras on it go to the graveyard, and counters are lost. Commander ninjutsu is a variant that also works from the command zone, and since it isn't casting, the commander tax doesn't apply.

An example at the table

You attack with a 1/1 flier, and your opponent has no fliers, so they declare no blockers. In the declare blockers step you pay the 2-mana ninjutsu cost of a 3/2 ninja in your hand, reveal it and return the 1/1 to your hand. The ninja enters tapped and attacking your opponent. In the combat damage step it deals 3 damage, which also triggers its ability that cares about dealing combat damage to a player. In your second main phase you recast the 1/1 for one mana, ready to do it again next turn.

Frequently asked questions

When can I use ninjutsu?
Any time you have priority while you control an unblocked attacking creature. In practice that's from the declare blockers step until the end of combat.
Can the ninja attack a different player?
No. It attacks the same player, planeswalker or battle as the creature you returned.
Can my opponent stop ninjutsu by killing the unblocked creature?
Not in response. Returning that creature is part of the cost, so it's already in your hand before anyone can respond.
Do I pay commander tax for commander ninjutsu?
No. Commander tax only applies to casting a commander, and commander ninjutsu puts it onto the battlefield without casting it.
